The Early Years Foundation Stage

The principles are for a child to be safe and healthy, to enjoy and achieve, to make a positive contribution and to prepare the child for economic well-being.

The principles of the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) are:

  • that each child is unique;
  • it is important for the child to develop positive relationships;
  • to create enabling environments; and
  • to encourage learning and development.

The principles meet the Every Child Matters outcomes which are for a child to be safe and healthy, to enjoy and achieve, to make a positive contribution and to prepare the child for economic well-being.

The aims of the EYFS are:

  • to set standards;
  • to provide equality of opportunity;
  • to create a framework for partnership working;
  • to improve quality and consistency; and
  • to lay a secure foundation for future learning

Staff use remarkably personalised plans to focus activities precisely for children’s individual next steps in learning.
